A 25-year veteran Delaware prosecutor now is on the receiving end of criminal charges after he was arrested by Doylestown Township police on suspicion of driving under the influence, according to the Delaware News Journal.
Deputy Attorney General Steven Wood was stopped after police spotted his silver SUV weaving in the southbound lane of Easton Road. The arresting officer said he smelled alcohol on the defendant's breath and that he slurred his words, failed a field sobriety test and admitted that he was drinking at a nearby bar.
Now Steven Wood, who has no doubt faced off against a fair share of defense attorneys during his long career, will have to swallow his pride as he retains his own Pennsylvania DUI lawyer.
Although he is still innocent until proven guilty, unless he decides to plead guilty, Steven Wood addressed the incident publicly:
"I made a terrible and stupid mistake for which I accept full responsibility."
Delaware Chief Deputy Attorney General Charles Butler did not excuse his colleague for the DUI charge but lauded his 25 years of service, noting that he has been "an excellent prosecutor and has served Delaware with honor."
He declined to give details but said Steven Wood "has suffered the consequences" of his alleged actions within the department. However, he did say that Steven Wood remains with the department and will continue to prosecute Delaware homicide cases.
Pennsylvania court documents indicate that the official breathalyzer test results are still pending but police said his blood-alcohol concentration was somewhere between 0.08 and 0.16 percent.
Steven Wood is the third Delaware prosecutor to be charged with a DUI in the past three years.
