Three people were arrested over the weekend for DUIs in Doylestown Township. The arrest of all three share a very similar set of circumstances and show how the police use their five senses when looking for the signs of drunk driving.
According to The Intelligencer, the three people were all arrested in the early morning hours and observed either driving erratically or after they had gotten into an accident. In addition, all three reportedly smelled of alcohol and failed field sobriety tests.
The circumstances of the arrests highlight how police rely on their five senses when spotting the signs of drunk driving and making DUI stops:
- Sight. Driving erratically and swerving lanes is one of the most common giveaways of drunk driving. Two of the three arrested for DUIs in Doylestown were stopped after police observed erratic driving.
- Smell. Having bad breath can get you in trouble. The smell of alcohol is incredibly powerful and can linger on your breath and on your clothes. In all three Doylestown arrests, the police smelled alcohol on the drivers' bodies.
- Taste. Licking a suspected drunk driver is not likely to happen. However, police will likely request that you take a Breathalyzer test. If you test over 0.08 blood alcohol content, you're likely to get a DUI.
- Hearing. Slurring your speech is another dead giveaway. It's hard to make coherent sentences or sound intelligent when you're drunk and those around you are not.
- Touch. Being a belligerent drunk will land you in the slammer. Resisting arrest, putting your hands on a cop, and fighting with a cop are all no-no's.
Spotting the signs of drunk driving is not so difficult. You just have to rely on your five senses. That's what three unfortunate individuals found out over the weekend in Doylestown Township.
